For the first time since our establishment in 2013, Web We Want has opened its membership beyond the founding committee of 20 digital and human rights groups. In less than two years, our joint effort to promote a free and open Web resulted in partnerships with more than 75 human rights campaigns in 35 countries, reaching millions worldwide.
To build on this success and expand our reach even further, Web We Want opened its membership this year to new applicants who have a stake in the fight for online and human rights. We were delighted with the quality, diversity and number of applicants. From groups like Fundacja Nowoczesna Polska – the organisation that has created Poland’s largest free digital library – to Pakistan’s Digital Rights Foundation teaching women activists about online safety, we were humbled by the amount of interest in joining our coalition.
Applicants explained how their work demonstrated a commitment to a free and open Web, with applications thoroughly reviewed and evaluated by the Steering Committee. After carefully considering all applications, Web We Want ultimately selected more than 100 new member organisations to join the coalition.
This expanded global coalition represents 60 countries across every region of the world. We’re excited about the possibilities our new members bring to advance the Web We Want movement by promoting the Web as a public good and advocating for digital rights.
We know that this diversity, not only in geography but also in culture, language, viewpoints and issues will create a lively, exceptional group of partners. And we already have some exciting collaborations planned for late 2015!
